Jeff Chan received his BSc degree in chemistry from the University of British Columbia in 2006 and his PhD from Simon Fraser University in 2011. For his graduate research, he received the Boehringer Ingelheim (Canada) Doctoral Research Award for the top Canadian thesis in the areas of organic and bioorganic chemistry. From 2011-2014 he was a Human Frontiers Science Program Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. Jeff joined the faculty at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 2014.

About Me

The Zhang research group is primarily interested in the design, development, characterization, and application of advanced materials with emphasis on optical and electronic nanomaterials (nanocrystals or quantom dots) of both semiconductors and metals. These nanomaterials have novel physical and chemical properties due to quantum confinement and exceedingly large surface to volume ratio. The design and synthesis of the materials are mostly based on inorganic colloidal chemistry methods. The synthesized materials are characterized systematically and extensively using a variety of experimental techniques includingSERS (surface-enhanced Raman scattering), optical spectroscopy, ultrafast laser,x-ray (XAFS, XPS), ESR, electrochemical, and microscopy. In the meantime, the groupactively explores emerging technological applications of these advanced nanomaterials in areas such as solar energy conversion, hydrogen generation and storage, cancerbiomarker detection, photocatalysis, sensors, imaging, detectors, and lasers. A number of projects have been accomplished and several are currently underinvestigation. Some examples of on-going projects include:1. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) based on Au and Ag nanoparticles/aggregates and development of SERS sensors for chemical and biomedical detection with emphasis on cancer biomarkersincluding antigens and antibodies of ovarian and lung cancers.

2. Ultrafast interfacial electron dynamics and surface modification ofsemiconductor nanoparticles: CdS, CdSe, CdTe, PbS, Ag2S, CuS. Biocnjugationof semiconductor quantum dots to proteins for biomedical cancer detection based on photoluminescence

 

3. Hydrogen generation and storage based on novel semiconductor, oxide,and metal nanostructures including nanowires and nanorods via photoelectrochemistry or photocatalysis.

4. Photoluminescence and up-conversion luminescence of doped semiconductor nanoparticles: Mn2+ and Cu+ doped ZnS, ZnSe, CdS nanoparticles

5. Solar energy conversion based on dye, polymer, or quantum dot sensitized nanocrystalline TiO2, WO3, or ZnO solar cells, in conjunction with N-doping, using conjugated polymers as solid electrolytes

 

6. Hot electron relaxation in metal nanoparticles and nanoparticle aggregates: Ag, Au, Pd, and Pt

 

7. Photothermal imaging and ablation therapy of cancer cells using hollow gold nanoshells (HGNs)

EDUCATION: Jin-Quan Yu earned his B.S. in Chemistry in 1987, at East China Normal University, Shanghai, his M.S. in Organic Chemistry in 1990, at the Guangzou Institute of Chemistry, Guangzou, China and his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry in 1999, at Cambridge University, Cambridge, UK, under the direction of Professor JB Spencer. Dr. Yu completed his postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University in 2002, under the direction of Professor EJ Corey. APPOINTMENT: From 2003 to 2004 Dr. Yu was a Royal Society Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge, UK, and from 2004 to 2006 he held the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. In 2007 he began his position as a Tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at The Scripps Research Institute, and in August of 2010 he was promoted to Full Professor in the Department of Chemistry, The Scripps Research Institute.

About Me

Jing Li is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Rutgers University. Her research is focused on the development of functional materials for clean and renewable energy applications. Current activities are primarily on two classes of materials: (a) microporous metal organic framework (MMOF) structures for hydrogen storage, carbon dioxide capture, small gas separation, catalysis and sensing; and (b) inorganic-organic hybrid semiconductors for photovoltaics, solid-state lighting and thermoelectrics. Her research programs in these areas are currently being funded by federal (DOE and NSF) and industrial grants. She has published some 200 papers including 6 reviews and 5 patents (two pending). Jing Li completed her doctoral study under the supervision of Prof. Roald Hoffmann and received her Ph.D. degree from Cornell University in January 1990. She joined Rutgers faculty after two years of postdoc work with Prof. Frank DiSalvo. She is currently Associate Editor for Journal of Solid State Chemistry and Topic Editor for Crystal Growth & Design. She has also served as member of Editorial Advisory Board for several journals, including Inorganic Chemistry. Her honors include a 1994 Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award, a 1995 National Science Foundation’s CAREER Award and a 1995 Presidential Faculty Fellows (PFF) Award. She was a Henry Rutgers Research Fellow in 1991-1993, and was awarded a 1996 Board of Trustees Fellowship by Rutgers University for Scholarly Excellence. She was a recipient of “Outstanding Achievement Award” by Chinese Association of Science and Technology (USA) in 2002 and of 2008 Cheung Kong Guest Chair Professor by the Ministry of Education of China.

About Me

Hi, I am Jun Hu. I am an associate professor at the University of Akron. I graduated from Fudan University in 1987, and went on to study natural product and photochemistry in Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry with Professor Guosheng Wu. I studied natural product synthesis at West Virginia University with Dr. Plato Magriotis from 1991-1994. During this time, I had a chance to study biochemistry and molecular biology of cells and genes. I studied Mass Spectrometry at Purdue University with Professor Robert Squires and was awarded a Ph.D. in 1997. I worked as a postdoctoral fellow with Professor Marye Anne Fox at UT-Austin and then NCSU in nano/surface photochemistry from 1998-1999. I started my independent research at the Department of Chemistry, University of Akron in 1999. My research is broadly defined as physical organic chemistry, with research projects in (1) Microfabricated supported membrane ion channel based biomimicries and diagnostics. (2) New trithiaadamantane based ion channel blockers for screening of antivirus drugs. (3) Chiral optical liquid crystal sensing materials for real-time and continuous monitoring of blood sugar for diabetic care. (4) Polymer nanoparticle based controlled release systems.
